From Antananarivo to the Tsiribihina and the west coast
A Madagascar tour between river, rocks and sea
First, the scenery drifts past as you travel by boat. Later, you find yourself among the limestone pinnacles of the Tsingy, look for lemurs in dry forest and watch the baobabs in the evening light. The journey ends on the south-west coast.
This western Madagascar tour is designed as an 18-day travel idea. It combines Antsirabe, a three-day journey on the Tsiribihina, Tsingy de Bemaraha, the Morondava area and the coastal route to Ifaty. The planned starting and finishing point is Antananarivo. I work with you to adapt the daily itinerary to your travel dates, available connections and wishes.

What to expect along this route

Among the limestone pinnacles
Limestone, gorges and narrow passages shape the landscape of Bemaraha. There are several walking circuits. We choose a route that suits your fitness and how comfortable you feel with heights.

Lemurs and baobabs
Kirindy Forest, north of Morondava, provides a habitat for both diurnal and nocturnal lemurs. The Avenue of the Baobabs and the intertwined “Baobabs in Love” are also among the places many travellers hope to see in the region.

Towards the sea in the south-west
Between travel days, there is room for the beach and coastal life. Salary and Ifaty bring the route to a relaxed close. During planning, we discuss whether you would like more time swimming, snorkelling or simply staying by the sea.

Your tour in eight stages
The following sequence gives a sense of the journey. Each stage does not represent a single day. We decide how to divide the 18 days between driving, the river journey, nature visits and the beach for your travel dates. If you would like a slower pace or more stops, we adjust the scope together.
Antananarivo and Antsirabe
Arrive and set off into the highlands
On arrival in Antananarivo, an airport welcome and transfer to your hotel are planned. The journey then takes you to Antsirabe and onwards towards Miandrivazo. We allow separate travel days for this first stretch before the river journey begins.
Miandrivazo and the Tsiribihina
Three days on the river
The three-day boat journey is a distinct part of the trip. From the water, you discover changing riverbanks and life along the river. We clarify the type of boat, boarding point, overnight arrangements and suitable stops beforehand. A possible waterfall visit also depends on the agreed itinerary and conditions.
Onwards to Bekopaka
Towards the Tsingy de Bemaraha
After the river stage, you continue towards Bekopaka. The national park offers sharply sculpted limestone landscapes, forest and gorges. Some circuits are strenuous and include exposed sections. A possible pirogue trip on the Manambolo is arranged as a separate activity.
Kirindy and Morondava
Dry forest and baobabs in the evening light
Kirindy Forest is a main focus on the way to the Morondava area. A guided walk gives you the opportunity to look for lemurs, reptiles and birds. Evening wildlife watching is arranged separately. The Avenue of the Baobabs and the “Baobabs in Love” are further highlights. Which animals you see depends on nature.
Belo sur Mer
Pirogues, boatbuilding and coastal life
Belo sur Mer is known for its fishing boats and the traditional building of large wooden sailing boats. The pace of the journey changes here: village life, the sea and boatbuilding take the place of rocky landscapes. The visits possible during your stay also depend on the work taking place locally.
Kirindy Mitea and the coastal route
Forests, wetlands and long journeys
Kirindy Mitea is a separate national park, distinct from Kirindy Forest visited earlier. It combines dry forest with coastal areas and wetlands. We plan the visit according to access and season. The journey continues via Manja, Morombe and Andavadoaka, allowing enough time for tracks and breaks.
Salary and Ifaty
Time on the beach
Stays on the coast are planned towards the end of the journey. Depending on the place and conditions, you can swim, snorkel or enquire about a pirogue outing. We discuss these extra activities separately. If several quiet beach days matter to you, we take this into account when dividing up the stages.
Toliara and Antananarivo
Back to the capital with time to spare
A domestic flight from Toliara to Antananarivo is planned for the return. We check the flight date and availability before the final booking. The return to the capital includes a time buffer before your international flight home. Whether there is time for a city visit depends on the confirmed schedule.

When to go, travel conditions and preparation
Choose your travel dates to suit the route
Access roads in the west and the coastal tracks are especially important for this journey. The park authority lists May to November for land access to Kirindy Mitea. This is a guide for one part of the route, rather than confirmation that every stretch is passable. We check the full connection for your travel dates.
More about weather and travel seasonsAllow proper time for travel days
Longer journeys are part of this tour. Tracks, crossings and local conditions influence the itinerary. We therefore agree the vehicle, overnight stops and time buffers beforehand. An extra sight should not use up the time needed for the whole next stage.
Understand driving timesAgree walks and overnight arrangements
For the Tsingy, choosing a suitable circuit matters. Sturdy footwear, sun protection and enough drinking water are part of the preparation. Tell me how long you like to walk and whether heights concern you. Your accommodation preferences and overnight arrangements during the boat journey are just as important.
Explore accommodation and comfort optionsKirindy Mitea and Kirindy Forest are different protected areas. Wildlife sightings, including lemurs or flamingos, depend on the place, season and natural conditions. They are not guaranteed parts of the programme.

Questions about touring western Madagascar
Is the itinerary fixed at exactly 18 days?
Eighteen days is the starting point for this proposed trip. We agree the detailed daily itinerary around your flights, road conditions and available services. If you would like more beach time or extra nature visits, we look at adjusting the route or trip length.
How demanding is the walk through the Tsingy?
The circuits vary considerably. Some include steep sections, narrow passages and exposed places. We therefore discuss your experience and choose a suitable circuit with the local guide. Not every route suits every person.
Where do we sleep during the boat journey?
We clarify the boat type, sleeping arrangements and facilities in your individual offer. The boat journey is planned for three days, with meals. Please ask about anything that matters particularly to you, such as sleeping spaces, toilet facilities or luggage.
Are Kirindy and Kirindy Mitea the same place?
No. Kirindy Forest lies north of Morondava and is part of the Menabe Antimena protected area. Kirindy Mitea lies further south towards Belo sur Mer and also includes coastal areas and wetlands. The two visits are planned separately.
Can I add more time by the sea?
Yes. Mention any extra beach days you would like in your enquiry. Together, we look at which stops and travel days fit well together. Activities such as snorkelling or pirogue outings are arranged according to the place and conditions.
Your journey through the west
River adventure, baobabs or more time by the sea?
Tell me your possible travel dates, group size and what matters most to you along the way. You can mention “Desert Adventure” in your enquiry so I can identify this route. We can then continue planning your tour of western Madagascar together.
